Paper and Pewter

Over 1 pound of pewter is supported by printer paper with no more that 1/4” overlap at any joint, and no more than one paper’s thickness at any other point. (the inner structure of the bottle utilizes a system of paper tubes, all also only 1 paper thick with no more than 1/4” overlap where the paper is joined to itself to create the tubes)
There are 22 dog tags stamped in correlating percentages of male/female and methods of suicide per the 22/day veteran suicide statistics (2019). a recognizable whiskey bottle was used as the support for the dog tags to represent the often-unhealthy coping mechanisms utilized by United States veterans in leu of the overwhelmed and ineffective Veteran’s Association Mental Health Care system.
This is representative of the flimsy (though often only) support that these coping mechanisms such as drugs, alcohol, and smoking provide for veterans suffering with mental illnesses.
Beautiful Journey
Ceramic, Paint, Gold Leaf
12”, 2019
This piece was inspired by the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery known as Kintsugi (“golden joinery”) or Kintsukuroi (“golden repair”). The idea is that broken pottery is all the more beautiful because it has a story so the broken pieces are put back together with gold to highlight the journey the pottery has taken. It is important that as humans we recognize that our journeys add to our personal stories and even when we believe we are broken we are all the more beautiful for our tragedies as we heal from them.
